What’s Happening at Emerge, P.C.

1.) In February of 2007, 8 members of our team attended the Association for Behavior Analysis International Conference on Autism in Boston, MA. A breakout session from the International conference, this conference specifically focused on the progress and challenges in the Behavioral treatment of Autism. Featured speakers included Catherine Lord, Ph.D., Mark Sundberg, Ph.D., BCBA, and Catherine Maurice, Ph.D. Some of the topics discussed were the “Critical Importance of Science-Based Treatments for Autism”, “Effective School-Based Programs for Children with Autism”, and “ABA Programming In The Home: Characteristics of Quality Services and Providers”.

Additionally Emerge, P.C. presented a poster demonstrating the results of our double-blind, single-subject, GFCF (Gluten Free, Casein Free) reversal study. 2.) In May of 2007 EPC team members will attend the International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR) in Seattle, Washington. This 4-day conference is open to professionals and parents alike and will address topics such as: “Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) - The Potential Usefulness of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)”, “Adaptive Behavior Deficits Associated with AD/HD Symptomatology in Children with Autism”, “Behavior Predictors of Development in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder over Two Years”, and others. 3.) Emerge is pleased to announce that Dr. Huckabee has joined the University of Denver staff as Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Education. She is currently teaching Developmental Psychopathology to graduate students in School Psychology and Counseling.

4.) Emerge would also like to welcome Kim Wortley, BS as the newest addition to our therapist team and brings a wealth of experience with individuals with disabilities in community and recreation activities.

5.) Emerge is pleased to announce plans to collaborate with Denver Cooperative Preschool in offering Therapeutic Play Groups for preschool children with and without disabilities and other services.   • March 20, 2007 - Expanding the Promise for Individuals with Autism Act of 2007 Announced Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Senator Wayne Allard (R-CO) announced the introduction of the Expanding the Promise for Individuals with Autism Act of 2007 (EPIAA), landmark legislation that would dramatically expand federal funding for life-long services for people with autism.
  • U.S. Senate Designates April “National Autism Awareness Month” The U.S. Senate adopted a resolution on Feb. 13 designating April 2007 as “National Autism Awareness Month.” The resolution reflects the Senate's recognition of the autism epidemic, noting the CDC's new prevalence statistic of 1 in 150, and a commitment to raising awareness within the general public.
  • Campaign for Combating Autism Act and D.O.D. Appropriations Continues
  • Congressmen Chris Smith (R-N.J.), Mike Doyle (D-Penn.) and Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) this week asked their fellow members of the House of Representatives to sign on to two letters seeking federal funding for autism activities. The first letter seeks $168 million in fiscal 2008 for autism research, surveillance and services in the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education Appropriations bill. This funding is consistent with the recommendations of the Combating Autism Act. The second letter requests $15 million for autism research in the Department of Defense Appropriations bill.

1.) On February 1, 2007 Cure Autism Now and Autism Speaks merged to form a single voice for children, families, and professionals. Together they are hosting the 2007 Colorado Walk Now for Autism @ Invesco Field, date to be determined. Emerge will have a team at this walk, check back for more information about how you can help or join our team! 2.) Come Celebrate Autism Awareness Month with the Autism Society of Boulder County on April 20, 2007 from 6:00-8:30pm @ The Boulder Broker Inn. Co-Sponsored by 97.3 KBCO, Centennial Wine & Spirits and The Boulder Broker Inn, it’s a celebration for ASD individuals and their artistic talents. For more information visit www.autismboulder.org.

3.) Autism Society Boulder County Annual Picnic - May 19th- What do you bring? Bring your family, a blanket to spread, sunglasses and sunscreen. Food, fun and games are provided. The picnic will be held May 19th at Louisville Community Park. For more information go to www.autismboulder.org
